Structure of the course
This programme aims at reducing sensory distractions in learning by targeting one sense at a time to ensure the pattern introduced is secured.
This programme is unique because of it’s ease of use and being suitable for all age group.
The programme ensures generalization of the pattern or rules learnt through various activities.
Children between the Age of 5-8 will be placed at stage 1 and for student’s 8 years and above will be placed according to the results of the baseline assessment. There will be assessment after every stage the individuals will be moved up a stage if deemed appropriate.
At the end of every stage there will be assessment to determine the progress and plan of action will be developed from that result.
Description of the Programme-
Spell- Bound programme has been developed by professionals working in the field of Education for over 25 years with background in developing academic skills of individuals with Specific Learning Difficulty. It is based on the programmes which has been used successfully for over 30 years to teach spelling.
This programme is primarily based on introducing the individual to the spelling rules which guide the principals behind spelling in English. Phonics although very popular method of teaching spellings, often it has been observed that a huge number of students struggle with the phonology and benefits from knowing the rules.
In each lesson the rule, or new phoneme/grapheme link, is presented using individualized resource and approach. The aim is to establish rapid recognition and production of individual sounds and letters that has been introduced. Individuals are introduced the patterns and rules through story and songs followed by worksheets which focus on identifying, recognising, use of the pattern in various context e.g. at sound level, at word level, at sentence level and then at text level. At each level it is reinforced through tracking, spelling list, using those words in sentence level and in wider writing. Weekly homework is set and marked to ensure re-inforce the learning.
Its divided into 3 stages and students are placed based on their age and results of the initial testing.
Stage 1
This stage deals with one-syllable words and stresses the importance of the closed syllable/ short vowel, open syllable/long vowel. This forms the basis of most of the spelling rules.
Stage 2
This stage covers spelling choices for the long vowel sounds, vowel digraphs, vowel –consonant digraphs, suffixing rules and irregular plurals
Stage 3
This stage covers syllable division, regular final syllables, complex suffixing ruels and complex spelling patterns.
Assessment
Every individual attending the course will be assessed at the entry point with a Standardized Test and a placement test establish the basal level. At the end of every stage there will be an assessment to ensure the individual is ready to move on to the next level. At the end of the course individual will be assessed through a standardized test to establish the progress. A written report will be provided with the results and recommendation at the end of the course.
